宣统三年（1911年）十月十五日，清政府外务部收到瑞典驻华公使倭伦白（Gustaf·Oscar·Wallenberg）发来的外交照会，内容为瑞典政府委托倭伦白通过外务部向清政府发出了参加1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会马术项目的官方邀请，该件档案现存于中国第一历史档案馆，这是目前所知中国官方收到最早的奥运会正式邀请。

照会全文如下：
According to the programme of the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912,of which I have the honour of transmitting two copies under separate cover,a Horse-Riding Competition will be held during the days from the 13th to the 17th of July as part of the Games.
Of the programme for this competition are two copies enclosed under the same separate cover.
The committee of the Horse-Riding Competition,which organizes this particular event of the Games,is highly desirous of participation by foreign military officers and has solicited the intermediary of the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs for the transmission of invitations to foreign Governments.
Acting,therefore,under the instructions of my Government,I beg leave to ask for your Excellency's good offices in order that the necessary steps may be taken for conveying the above invitation to the authorities concerned.
I avail myself of this occasion to renew to Your Excellency assurances of my highest consideration.

为照会事：西历一千九百十二年本国都城举行运动大会，内有驰马一门，系定于西历七月十三至十七号比赛。该会深愿各国武官赴会，兹奉本国政府训条照会。
贵大臣希代转致贵国武官届期赴会为荷。所有该会事由单，另行寄上。为此照会，须至照会者。
外务部将此事咨行陆军部，因辛亥革命已于两月前爆发，陆军部只能答复：“极愿派员赴会，以表同情。惟现时未便派员前往。相应咨覆，贵部查照婉词转致瑞使可也。”清政府遂婉拒了邀请，中国也无缘参加本次瑞典奥运会。
1912年在瑞典首都斯德哥尔摩举办的第五届现代奥运会，是近代以来影响力较大的一届奥运会，摆脱了前三届奥运会与世博会同办的限制，推动了奥林匹克运动成功走向世界。该届奥运会参赛国的数量比第一届翻了一番，运动员人数增长了8倍，正式参赛的有28个国家，运动员共2547人，首次实现五大洲国家共聚奥运会赛场，埃及、卢森堡、葡萄牙、叙利亚和日本五国均为首次受邀并正式参赛。当时，同为东亚国家的中国和日本都收到瑞典政府的邀请照会，日本奥运会代表团最终成行，而中国则遗憾地失之交臂。直到20年后的1932年，运动员刘长春才首次正式代表中国出现在奥运会赛场上。
